A total eclipse right after holy week inspired me to share some of my thoughts from the BSF study of John this year. The timing of the study lined up perfectly with the events of holy week. 7 PAX showed up on a beautiful morning before sunrise to walk the road of the last week of Jesus’s glorification on earth.
PAX: Al Gore, Dr. Freud, Atticus, The Mick, Heisenberg, Light’s Out, Campbells (QIC)
Here’s what we did:
WarmUp
The plot to kill Jesus was accelerated by the kindness he showed to Lazarus and his sisters by raising him from the dead… So we started with 10 burpees
We discussed (while we caught our breaths) Jesus’s anointing by Mary, the only one who seemed to pick up on the fact that Jesus said He was going to die.
Lot lap (high knees, Carioca, butt kickers)
Mosey to hill north of farmhouse. Here we discussed Palm Sunday. For a moment the world seems to get it right by celebrating Jesus as King. Jesus didn’t get caught up in it. Instead He discusses how a kernal of wheat must fall to the ground and die if it is to produce a harvest. That’s what He did. He didn’t have to come to earth and die but He did it so we could experience new life. He then told his disciples those who love their lives will lose it and those who hate their life will keep it for eternal life. He also said that He didn’t come to condemn but to save, but anyone who rejects His words is condemned.

Mosey to Upper Room (the portico) Knowing God had put all things in His hands He humbled Himself before His disciples and washed their feet. Then He told them that no servant is greater than his master and if He their Lord washed their feet, they should wash one another’s feet. A new command He gave them, Love one another as I’ve loved you.

He also told His disciples that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me. He also tried to convince them that He was one with the Father. He then proceeded to tell them that when He sent the Holy Spirit they would know that He is in the Father, you in me and I in you. He also told them He would give them a gift, His peace.
Mosey back to the hill
Jesus then told them they would need to abide in Him to bear fruit. He would also prune them so they bear even more fruit. He then told them about another gift He would give them, His joy. He told them that it is to their advantage that He goes away so He can send the Holy Spirit. He told them again about His peace though they would have tribulation in this life. But He said, “take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Mosey to blocks and circle up East of the farmhouse. Jesus then went out to meet the mob that came to arrest Him. He stepped out to the front and asked who they were looking for. They said Jesus, and He said “I am He” At that they fell to the ground. Jesus was in control the whole time and was not a victim of evil men. He is then abandoned by all His friends and led into the hands of enemies He had just recently rebuked for their hypocricy. They lied about Him and beat Him.

Mosey to gravel lot. Jesus was then taken to Pilate where He was flogged and embarrassed in front of all, while His own people called for His blood. Still Jesus reminded Pilate that he would have no power of Jesus unless it was given to Him by His Father.

Put blocks away and grab a log. Mosey to small back retention pond. Here we discussed the cross, the thief that was saved even though he had no chance to do any good works, and the great love of God poured out through what Jesus did to pay for our sins.
Bring logs home and mosey to flag.
We then discuss how all the hopelessness of history was turned when Jesus simply uttered Mary’s name. Now it was known that the Son of Man was raised from the dead. Now our greatest enemy, death, was defeated not only for Jesus but for all who would trust in His name.

Throughout the book of John I’ve counted Jesus referring to His Father as the One who sent me. Jesus then turns it to us and says as the Father has sent Me, now I am sending you.

I know I’ve already said too much but I’d like to leave you with a few notes I took this Sunday from a fantastic Kenyan preacher.
Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?
Do you want to be brave or be safe? You can’t be both.
You don’t want a God who has to explain Himself to you or ask your permission to mess with your life.
As someone who has had their world turned upside down over the last couple years I can agree with this last statement. God is good and He can do what ever He wants with my life. The only thing I have to do is to trust Him that He is working all things together for my good. In my life I have lived as a coward, my prayer is that God would make me brave and not safe. I want to invite you brothers to consider your dreams and desires and ask yourselves are the things I am living for worth Christ dying for? Let’s continue to encourage one another to live in boldness for the things that are most important.
P.S. Great job Light’s Out carrying the solo log, PAX of the day.
