A dozen PAX went out of their gourds for a shot at a glow-in-the-dark patch and had a rollicking time for about an hour this morning in the gloom as we ushered the fall into bloom with the Pumpkin Ruck.
Who was there? What did we do? What did we learn?
Who was there?
Atticus and Lights Out were the point people because they wore official F3 pullovers. Atticus had three kids there — Thunder, Margaret and the older daughter whose F3 name escapes me. Scarecrow and Oilermaker wore rucks for the first time since GrowRuck two weeks ago. Reck-It-Ralph, 4howa and Kato showed in force. Mufasa loves him a challenge patch, and I was there as well after another Friday on which I left the house at 6:30 a.m. and returned at 11:30 p.m.
What did we do?
We simply gathered at Bethel, the home of our weekly open-to-the-public, 6 a.m. group ruck. Some of us ran late, but we atoned with extra pumpkins. We walked the neighborhood east of the Bethel campus and talked about how little we really know that neighborhood since we’ve been there in various states of disorientation, daylight and weather.
Atticus’ tracker clocked us at 2.87 miles in 1:04:12. Not bad. Met the two-mile minimum.
What did we learn?
*Crown Point technically does not have a pumpkin patch, so we were safe within the GORUCK show FAQ-prescribed rules that allowed us to not have to go directly to a pumpkin patch to earn this patch.
* We went from shorts and T-shirt weather to hoodies and tights weather REALLY fast there. It felt like fall though.
*Atticus cut down his “That’s what she said” slider by 90 percent by bringing his children. You know he is hurting when he can’t pluck all of the low-hanging cucurbits. That’s fine with Mufasa. On the back stretch of the ruck, however, a nice old lady passed us and said, “Nice pumpkins.” It was LITERALLY what SHE said. Her new F3 name is Iha.
*Meijer has a weekend sale 2-for-1 on Jack-o’-lanterns.
*HHH hates fun.
*It’s interesting thinking about this October vs. last October when many of us were gearing up for the first and last ever Tough in the careers of Blue, Campbells, Lights Out, Bert, Tacklberry and HHH with Cadre Belman. Mog Mile events are this weekend, and that was the theme of our Tough. Crazy that it’s been close to a year.
*Scarecrow won the costume competition with no competition. He has lots of tips for making a pleasant pumpkin helmet for rucking.
*Kato rocks Jordan Capri pants.
*Plastic pumpkins make GREAT pranks. It’s good to laugh on the CSAUP ruck club callouts.
*Some people watch the GORUCK show. Others don’t have down time like that.
*Pumpkins and people come in all shapes, sizes, races, colors, and abilities, and it’s great to embrace diversity.
This was a good time, not a chore, no question. The only question is whether we want to do it again with new people or if we successfully got everyone out at the right time to quench that patch addiction. The ruck.beer challenge for the month is to do five collective miles toting pumpkins. We’re halfway there! Whoa-oh, rucking on a prayer!
