Pax: Kato, LaLoyd, Brutus Beefcake, Muck
Pathfinder has been quite the journey for me
This guy has been the key to the successes we’ve seen these past 3 months with our ruck club and in general. He’s posted to most Tuesday night rucks, multiple fng’s, he’s getting guys into rucking like Matty Backs,Wreck it Ralph, 4howa, Flux, buying rucks and sand bags, buying coupons and so forth, working with Ansel and the Buttercups, committing to a South Shore Ruck Club Wednesday night ruck. I can’t say enough about the guy. Thank you Kato for helping us. Back to the BB.
Kato and I set off around 9:30pm at Troy. Kato said he would carry most everything so I could keep my pack light. He had about a weeks worth of supplies ready to roll. Including food, custom tacos, 3l of water in 4l bottles, wipes, and a billy club.
We had a few strange encounters with late night trail walkers. We made a point to say hello and hopefully get a response back in case they were not so friendly. Muck was on the headlamp so I was looking ahead to see if anyone and anything was around. Each overnight crew needs a man to keep a look out. However, some things you just can’t be prepared for.
We walked into Griffith near the High School and we heard a very bizarre voice saying, “Hello, how are you this evening?” I think Kato and I took a second to process who in the heck.. I flashed my light in the direction of the voice and Boom, it was Laloyd on a park bench. Vintage Bogel. He joked that he was going to suprise us coming out from the bushes. Pretty sure Kato would have hit him 4x with the billy club before we knew who he was.
For the next 8 miles we were cooking pretty good at about a 17.5 pace with no breaks. Some highlights were spotting all the NWI night life such as biking-tenters, deer, bats, salamanders and a picture perfect crawdad in the middle of the trail. Even a cat-predatory type creature on the way back. Some lowlights were mosquitos, sticky air, and Kato farting up a storm. Laloyd parked by Twincade in Griffith which I guess is open till 2am on a Sunday. I was toying with heading back with him in the car and dealing with Pathfinder the next time around but thought of where we came from and decided a one hour pop with Laloyd was not quite worth throwing away 3 months of work. It was a cool notion non the less.
We made it to the trailhead right on time right around 1pm. The plan was to take a 30 minute break and head back out. But this time it was with Matty B and Kato doing a team #45 coupon ruck 8 miler. Mad respect to Kato doing an overnight coupon ruck after completing 10.5 miles. Matty did a great job during the night. He remained positive and kept things lite.
We made it to Broad St. so Matty went his way and Kato and I headed toward Troy.
I asked Coors about the 20 mile overnight ruck and he said, “Its not bad but the last 3 miles suck.” I think that is a very accurate statement. Those last three miles getting back from Griffith felt like an eternity. Kato and I dug deep and got it done. I kept thinking, man, how did those guys do 50 miles? I may cross that road someday and will look to get advice on that one too.
Kato and I ended up with 21.1 miles, Laloyd for about 9 miles, and Matty Backs for 8 miles of team 45# coupon rucking with Kato.
Congratulations to those that finished Pathfinder 020 and big thank you to Kato for supporting us on the journey.
Tuesday will be a Mud Ruck at Thicker for all those Pax interested.
